SINACABAN, Misamis Occidental — The Department of Tourism (DOT) Region X has described the Asenso Misamis Occidental Recreation and Adventure Park (AMORAP) as more than a tourism destination, calling the provincial government’s flagship development a “statement with intent.”

DOT Region X Regional Director Marie Elaine Unchuan made the assessment during AMORAP’s inauguration as part of the Miss Universe Philippines activities held in Misamis Occidental earlier this year.

“AMORAP reflects that standard. It’s a statement with intent,” Unchuan said.

She said the development reflects a deliberate decision to invest in tourism and use the sector as a tool for economic growth, community empowerment and long-term development.

Unchuan also credited the leadership of Governor Henry S. Oaminal for demonstrating how purposeful tourism investments can create opportunities not only for visitors but, more importantly, for local communities.

She said AMORAP reflects how a clear vision, combined with strong leadership and sustained investment, can transform tourism into a catalyst for local economic development.

Built under the Asenso Administration, AMORAP was developed by the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental without incurring loans, according to the provincial government.

The project forms part of the province’s efforts to strengthen its tourism industry while pursuing investments intended to generate long-term economic opportunities.

Since welcoming its first guests during the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 activities in April, AMORAP has expanded its role beyond accommodation.

The facility has emerged as a venue for sports tourism, hosting one of the country’s major pickleball tournaments, while also serving as a destination for faith-based gatherings after welcoming hundreds of Catholic bishops during the 132nd Plenary Assembly and Retreat of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

Its restaurant has also opened its doors to walk-in diners in addition to in-house guests, while the facility has recently begun hosting community celebrations and private events.

These developments have broadened AMORAP’s function within Misamis Occidental’s tourism ecosystem, creating more opportunities to attract visitors and host events beyond traditional leisure travel.

For the DOT, the milestones demonstrate the broader purpose behind the project.

Rather than functioning solely as a resort, AMORAP is positioning itself as a platform for tourism-related economic activity, national events and new opportunities for local communities.

The provincial government expects the continued development of AMORAP and other tourism initiatives to strengthen Misamis Occidental’s position as an emerging destination in Northern Mindanao while allowing more visitors to experience what the province has to offer.
